The lighthouse has closed. The shops have emptied. Dinner is over. Now what?
I think evenings are my favorite part of a Maine vacation. Not because they’re exciting—but because they aren’t. By the time the sun begins to slip behind the trees, you’ve probably already done the things you came here to do. You’ve climbed the mountain, wandered through the little shops, found the perfect lobster roll, and taken more photos than you’ll remember to look at later.
And then something wonderful happens. The pace changes.
The harbor grows quiet as the last boats make their way home. Porch lights begin to glow. Someone nearby lights a fire. The air cools just enough that you reach for a sweatshirt, and suddenly nobody is in a hurry anymore. I think that’s what I love most about Maine.
It doesn’t ask you to keep chasing the next thing. It quietly reminds you that sometimes the best part of the day begins after the itinerary is over. Some of my favorite vacation memories weren’t made at noon. They happened after the sun went down. So tonight, stay outside a little longer. Walk down to the water one more time. Order one more drink. Watch the sky change colors. Listen to the loons if you’re lucky enough to hear them. Tomorrow will still be there.
As the Light Begins to Fade…
Evenings don’t need an agenda, but if you’re looking for a little inspiration, these are a few of my favorite ways to spend the last few hours of the day. Every corner of Maine has its own perfect place to end the day.
- Midcoast • Owls Head Lighthouse – A quiet, rocky shoreline where the sky seems to stretch forever.
- Boothbay Region • Ocean Point – Bring a blanket and watch the waves crash against the granite ledges.
- Acadia • Schoodic Point – My favorite alternative to Cadillac Mountain. Fewer people, bigger views, and every bit as magical.
- Moosehead • Lily Bay State Park – The reflection of the mountains across the lake at sunset is unforgettable.
- Downeast • West Quoddy Head Lighthouse – Stand at the eastern edge of the country and watch the colors dance across the Bay of Fundy.
Pull Up a Seat
One of my favorite things to do while traveling is find a place where I can linger. Not because I have somewhere to be… But because I don’t. Maybe it’s a glass of wine. Maybe it’s dessert. Maybe it’s sitting at the bar talking with the bartender about where they spend their days off. A few places I’d happily lose an evening…

Havana – One of Bar Harbor’s best dinners.
Project Social – Casual, creative, and a fun way to end the day.
Find a Fire. Stay Awhile.
Some of the best evenings don’t require reservations. Just a blanket, your favorite people, and a little time.
